Friday night, the stage of the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center will serve as a launch pad.
For the fifth time, the Carson City Recreation Division and Community Counseling Center are putting on a communitywide talent show for children under 18.
"We do it as a public service and to let kids get on stage," said Mitch Ames, operations supervisor for the theater. "It's a nice opportunity for kids."
Auditions were held Nov. 28, and 43 acts in six categories were selected for inclusion in the show.
Ames said almost everyone was allowed to continue to the finals, including several unique acts.
"There was one competitor who had a head costume. That was pretty interesting," Ames said.
Sisters Allison, 13, and Abigail Cowan, 6, will sing solos on Friday night. Allison has been singing in the show every year it has been put on, but this will be Abigail's first year.
"Her older sister has been in it since they started, and she wanted to audition like her older sister. She was finally old enough this year to be able to," said Julie Cowan, the girls' mother.
Allison is singing, "I Hope you Dance," and Abigail is singing "You'll Be in My Heart" from "Tarzan."
Julie said the talent show is one of the only opportunities the girls get to sing every year, and they look forward to it.
Allison took first-place in her category last year, and would like to win again since she won't be competing against her sister.
Ames said the judges will be selecting winners in: solo dance, group dance, solo vocal age 12 and under, solo vocal 13-18, musical instrument solo and variety. Each act will perform for three minutes.
The talent show is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, tickets are $5 for adults with children 12 and under are free.
The money raised from ticket sales goes to fund the event the following year.
"We want to make sure we can do it again and give these kids the opportunity to perform," Ames said.
