Area educators, business owners and professionals are giving high school students in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties a head start on learning how to be leaders.

Ron Kendall, a Carson City substitute teacher, took the Carson City Chamber of Commerce's class on leadership, and was so inspired he and his fellow graduates decided to put their training to work in more than just their respective fields - now they want to pass it on to students.

"Some of us got together and decided to do something," he said. "Tri-County Visions (the program created by the Carson-Douglas Leadership Alumni Association) came about because we wanted to find something useful to do."

The Mentor Center at Western Nevada Community College was the first project by Tri-County Visions.

Now, each quarter the organization produces a panel discussion TV program at the Carson Community Center to be aired on Carson Access Television, Channel 10. Each program features experts discussing a specific topic.

Today at 5:30 p.m., the program will focus on high school leadership programs and feature students from all three counties. The program will be broadcast live from the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

"Carson City has a high school leadership program, and if the others don't, we'll talk about it," Kendall said.

He would like to see the students try to bridge gaps and bring people together to solve problems they say the leadership alumni has.

"'I need your help' - those words are magic," he said. "What we've done with the alumni, with the students, is bring them together on this. We're saying, 'Look, we need your help to tell us what you need and what we can do to help.'"

Kendall said previous programs have focused on the common interests between the counties, methamphetamine use, emergency management, affordable housing and water issues.

He couldn't name specific programs that came out of the Tri-County Visions program, but said it helps bring together leaders of the counties.

"Is it going to solve all the problems? No, but you have to start somewhere," he said.
