Woman sent to prison for drug possession

Two women struggling for years with addiction were both sent to prison by a Carson City judge on Tuesday for failing to follow court orders.

Victoria Morrissey, 40, must serve 12 to 32 months in prison for felony failure to appear for sentencing and felony possession of a controlled substance.

"I gave you a chance, and you didn't take the chance," said District Judge Bill Maddox. "You've got to understand there are no more excuses."

Morrissey was to be sentenced in January 2005 on the drug charge when she failed to appear for the hearing. A warrant was issued for her arrest, and she was recently picked up by Washoe County officers on the Carson warrant.

Defense Attorney Ben Walker had asked the judge to allow Morrissey to go on probation so she could attend a drug rehab.

"I'm not a bad person. I just have a really bad drug problem," Morrissey said.

Carole Anne Owen, 44, was also sent to prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Maddox revoked her probation on the charge from October 2005 and sentenced her to 12 to 32 months in prison with 98 days time served.

Her underlying sentenced was put into effect after Owen failed to complete drug court and get a substance-abuse evaluation.

The following people also appeared this week in Carson City District Court:

• Christopher Mack, 21, pleaded guilty to statutory sex seduction. He will be sentenced Jan. 9.

• Matthew Greaves, 20, was sentenced to boot camp on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

• Kimberly Maddox, 21, received five years probation with a suspended sentence of 12 to 36 months in prison for a charge of trafficking.

• Jeff Cramer, 44, received five years probation with a suspended sentence of 12 to 30 months in prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

• A trial date of Jan. 9 has been set for Randall James Green, 35, on a charge of third-offense possession of a controlled substance.

• Ted Samuelson, 39, had his probation revoked and must serve 16 to 40 months in prison on a charge of uttering a forged instrument. He was also ordered to pay $1,075 in restitution.

• Gerald Frederick Karpe, 42, will be in court on Dec. 11 on a hearing related to a charge of sexual assault of a child under 14.
