Illegal bookie sentenced in Carson City

One of the purported leaders of an illegal Carson City bookmaking operation received probation in Carson City District Court on Tuesday.

Gary Gibb, 63, was sentenced to up to three years probation, with a suspended prison sentence of 12 to 48 months, and a $2,000 fine on a charge of unlicensed gaming.

According to the Gaming Control Board, homes at 2201 California St., 1762 Belmont St., and 301 Tahoe Drive in were raided by gaming and federal agents in June 2006.

Several people were arrested as a result of their involvement in the bookmaking operation.

Matthew Cote, 30; Frank Edmiston, 32; James Glon, 62; Leslie McElroy, 52; Timothy Payne, 50; and Darrel Bret Williams, 38, each pleaded guilty April 10 to unlicensed gaming activities and conspiracy to engage in unlicensed gaming activities. They will all be sentenced June 12.

Also before Judge Bill Maddox on Tuesday:

• Bench warrants were issued for Jermaine Clark Miller, 29, who failed to appear for arraignment on a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of sale, and Scott F. Morrissey Jr., 23, who failed to appear for a status check on a charge of attempted theft.

• Steven John Chan, 39, was sentenced to 12 to 48 months in prison on a charge of attempted theft. He also received one year in jail and was given credit for serving 103 days on a charge of unauthorized absence by a prisoner and 101 days in jail on a charge of forgery. All sentences are to run concurrent.

• Shaun Nicholas Day, 24, pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a controlled substance. He will be sentenced June 12.

• Bradley Owen Emmans, 21, was given up to three years' probation with a suspended prison sentence of 12 to 32 months on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. Emmans was also ordered to complete drug court.

• Jose Carlos Escobar, 26, pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property. He was sentenced to a $1,000 fine and 60 days in jail.

• Steven John Hipple, 39, had his probation revoked and must immediately begin serving a prison sentence of 12 to 48 months on a charge of attempted theft. Hipple was given credit for serving 187 days in jail.

• Anthony Alejo Lopez, 29, was sentenced to 12 months in jail, with credit for 36 days served, on a charge of conspiracy to commit battery with a deadly weapon.
