Carson girls defeat Elko

After a laugher the night before, the Carson High girls basketball team received a much needed test in the North Valleys Tournament.

A day after beating Sparks 75-8, the Senators were able to hold off Elko 61-54 on Friday. Elko came into the game at 5-0.

The Senators (3-1) advanced to a semifinal game against Rodriguez of Vacaville, Calif., at noon today at North Valleys. With a win, Carson would advance to today's 7 p.m. championship game and a possible showdown with California power Clovis West.

The game went back and forth as Carson trailed 18-17 after one quarter before taking a 34-28 halftime lead. The Senators led by 12 points in the third quarter, but Elko came back to trail 47-45 after three periods before Carson was able to regain control in the fourth quarter.

"The fourth quarter I thought we kind of wore them down with our press," Carson assistant coach Ron Tamori said.

Tamori also said Brandi Vega was able to take control when the Senators spread the floor.

"Brandi penetrated and dished off," Tamori said. "We were able to get some easy layups."

Danielle Peacon had a double double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, Kaitlin Burroughs had 11 points and Vega added seven points. Anna Macquarie contributed four points and seven rebounds and also shut down Elko's leading scorer.

CHS JVS 43, MCQUEEN 23

Carson (4-0) advanced to a noon semifinal game today in the North Valleys event against Reno High at North Valleys. Tiandra Rushing scored 13 points and Yvonne Hollett and Emily Field each had nine points.
