People who visit Carson City Hall during the holidays notice its decorations inside and outside.

They don't often linger around any particular light display or bright ribbons, but frequently stop to closely examine roughly 20 pieces of art created by local schoolchildren.

The drawings are entries in the 2006 Kit Carson Trail Holiday Art Contest, sponsored by the city's Redevelopment Authority. This year's theme was "Christmas Around the World."

Winners were chosen Dec. 7 as part of the Silver & Snowflake Holiday Tree Lighting festivities.

City employees, who served as judges, chose the top three pieces of artwork among students in grades kindergarten through fourth and fifth through 12th.

"It's a real privilege to be asked," said Zee McClintock, manager of employee benefits for the city and a contest judge for the second year in a row.

She enjoys taking part because it's an activity that allows local children "the chance to shine" during the holidays, she said. "The children showed a lot of creativity and talent."

Entries will be up in the windows in and near executive offices at City Hall through the end of the month.
