Hardy Mathiesen, 78, a lifelong Carson City resident, died Dec. 22, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Mathiesen was born July 7, 1928, in Reno, to Elmer and Sylvia Hendricks Mathiesen.

He married Catherine Baxter on June 23, 1956, in Carson City.

He graduated from Carson High School in 1946.

He worked for the Nevada Highway Department as an assistant road design engineer before retiring in 1982.

Mr. Mathiesen served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was devoted to his family

He was preceded in death by his brother William E. Mathiesen during World War II and sister Silvia Campbell.

Among his survivors are his wife of Carson City; son, David Mathiesen of Carson City; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Bart Richards of Idaho Falls, Idaho; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Russell Shank of Carson City; brother and sister-in-law Andrew and Dana Mathiesen of Virginia City; two grandchildren; and numerous extended relatives.

Cremation will take place at FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
