The partially clad body of a middle-aged woman was discovered in ankle-deep water near the shore of Timber Cove at Lake Tahoe this morning.

A man walking his dog on the beach a mile west of Stateline discovered the body, dressed only in undergarments, about 7:59 a.m.

South Lake Tahoe police officer Pierre Herring said it is possible the woman could have been in the lake for a long period of time but was stirred to the surface by strong winds and current.

Investigators recovered several items of clothing on the shoreline nearby, but it's unknown if the clothing belonged to the woman.

It's unclear when the woman died or what the cause of death is.

Detectives were inspecting a sailboat found one-quarter mile west of the body to see if it could be connected. The boat is possibly registered to a Stateline man.

In addition, a detective contacted the U.S. Coast Guard to determine the wind speed and current direction in case the woman was swept from a different location along the lake.

Anyone with information regarding the woman can contact the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at (530) 542-6100.
