A victim of domestic violence called this week to tell about her new outlook on life, thanks to members of the community.

"They are all so wonderful," she said.

She told how she came in contact with Frankie Haynes of Advocates to End Domestic Violence through the court system and the emotional support she received during the trial process from the organization.

That support continued Tuesday, when the woman told Haynes her eyeglasses had been destroyed by her abusive ex-boyfriend.

Haynes called Dr. Winkleman at the Vision Center at Wal-Mart on Topsy Lane. Winkleman conducted the eye exam free of charge and Wal-Mart donated new frames and lenses.

"I can't believe how wonderful that was," she said. "When he put the glasses on my face, I almost cried - I almost passed out. They are just great."

She said she wants other women to know of the services available to them through Advocates to End Domestic Violence, which can be contacted at 883-7654.

Additionally, she expressed gratitude to her former neighbors who called the police as she was being abused.

"People don't do nice things anymore," she said, "but these guys did."

Ken Beaton is paying close attention to whomever wins the Super Bowl.

Beaton makes steering wheel covers embroidered with graphics or logos, such as football team names. So far, several Seattle Seahawks fans have requested covers honoring their team.

Beaton said he first measures the customer's steering wheel and then orders the embroidered graphic from Mr. Roy Productions, 1851 S. Roop St. The wheel covers are made of a high-quality vinyl.

"If the Steelers win, I know more Steelers fans than Seattle Seahawks fans. But I can make them for both."

The cost starts at $37 and goes up, depending on the size of the embroidery. Contact Ken's Kovers at 721-4738 or visit www.discovercarsonci-tyonline.com/?kenskovers.

A 10th-grader from Dublin, Ga., writes in to request information on Nevada.

"As part of our learning experience, our teacher feels we should not only be familiar with the great writers of our country, but should know more about the region and the people from which those writers come," he said. "Each student chose two states to research and become experts on in order to teach this information to the rest of the class. To better understand your state, people, and regional writers, I would like to learn more about the people and places of your area, from those who actually live there."

He is hoping people will write to him and answer the following questions: What do you do for fun? What do you do for work? As an American, you can live anywhere you wish, why do you choose to live where you live? What makes Nevada a unique place to live? If you did not live in Nevada, where would you go and why? If you could tell one message to the rest of the world, what would it be? What do you know about the writers of your region? Which writers best exemplify the attitudes, beliefs, and opinions of your region?

Please send replies to: Inman Porter, c/o Carol Stroberg, Dublin High School, 1951 Hillcrest Parkway, Dublin, GA 30121

"Thanks you for your help with this information," he wrote. "Learning about a place from those who live in it certainly will make my experience more personal and meaningful. I look forward to hearing from all of you."
