Constance McAlman of Carson High School is a finalist in the 2006 competition for an Achievement Scholarship award. The 800 winners will be chosen late this month and notified by mail.

Carson student on vice-president's list at college

Cindy Stone of Carson City made the vice president's honor list for the fall semester at the University of Wyoming, Laramie. Students on the list earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average and took between six-12 credit hours of courses.

Gardnerville student on dean's list in New York

Andrew Andrews of Gardnerville was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Syracuse University in New York. Students must reach a minimum of a 3.4 grade-point average to be named to the dean's list at the school. Andrews is enrolled in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

ACT deadline upcoming

The registration postmark deadline for the next national ACT test is March 3. The late-registration deadline is March 17. The test is scheduled for April 8, and the cost is $29. To register, go to www.actstudent.org.

Family night at the library

Children and families are invited to a special evening of stories at the Carson City Library at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Members of Teens Embracing Reading in Carson, the Library's teen advisory board, will produce the story program. The teens plan to dramatize stories using puppets and readers' theater, and they will also read picture books. There will be songs and a craft activity to finish the program. Scenic Nevada photo contest

The fifth annual photo contest for high school students and adults is being held by Scenic Nevada. The deadline to submit photos is April 1. Judges will review the photos for originality, creativity and imagination, along with photographic quality. The photos submitted can depict either the positive or negative effects a community or its roadsides have on Nevada's scenery.

Two grand prizes of $150 each will be awarded for the best photo showing scenic beauty and the other for blight. Photos should be mailed to Scenic Nevada, P.O. Box 32, Reno, NV 89504.

Scholarship for hearing loss students

Dr. Nanci Campbell of Sierra Nevada Ear, Nose & Throat Association is offering 12 $1,000 scholarships to students with mild to profound hearing loss (minimum 40dB bilateral hearing loss) who are pursuing a bachelor's degree in any discipline. The money will be distributed through Sertoma International.

Applications can be downloaded from www.sertoma.org. The deadline is May 1.
