Free video for parents, teachers with stuttering children

The Stuttering Foundation is making their DVD "Stuttering: Straight Talk for Teachers" available via streaming video on their Web site www.stutteringhelp.org.

This video helps parents and teachers understand how stuttering can affect children of all ages.

Local student named to deans list, commissioned as officer

Local student Andrew Andrews, a Gardnerville resident, has been named to the dean's list at Syracuse University for Spring 2006. Students must achieve at least a 3.4 grade point average during the semester.

Andrews was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at a ceremony in Hendricks Chapel on the campus as a result of service in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at Syracuse.

Andrews is a senior marketing management and retailing major.

Local student awarded grocers association scholarship

Shannon Melzer of Carson City was been awarded the 2006-07 California Grocers Association Educational Foundation's Scolari's Food and Drug Co. Scholarship in the amount of $500. She is attending Western Nevada Community College this fall and majoring in retail management.

Scholarships are awarded to college students who are either employees or family members of employees of CGA member companies such as Scolari's Food and Drug Co. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, evidence of outstanding character and leadership potential.

Applicants must be full-time college students or planning to enroll as such.

Literacy organization to train volunteers

The Carson City Literacy Volunteers Organization will be conducting training sessions for those interested in tutoring adults in reading and writing English from 6-9 p.m. Sept. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 23. A

ll four classes must be completed for certification, and take place in Conference Room A at the Nevada State Library and Archives on Stewart Street. Registration is $25. For information call 885-1010.

Lecture series starts at library

Nevada Neighbors, Capital City Arts Initiative's lecture series on contemporary art, returns Wednesday with "Learning to Share: Collaborative Art from an Artist's Perspective," a lecture/presentation by Seattle artist Jennifer Montgomery.

The lecture is part of the launch of the Capital City Arts Initiative Art In Public Program, a focus of its 2006-2007 season

The lecture will take place at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St., at 7 p.m. There will be a reception at the library prior to her talk beginning at 6:15 p.m.

The lecture and reception are free.
