Carson City


Lecture series starts at library


Nevada Neighbors, Capital City Arts Initiative's lecture series on contemporary art, returns Wednesday with "Learning to Share: Collaborative Art from an Artist's Perspective," a lecture/presentation by Seattle artist Jennifer Montgomery.


The lecture is part of the launch of the Capital City Arts Initiative Art In Public Program, a focus of its 2006-2007 season.


The lecture will take place at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St., at 7 p.m. There will be a reception at the library prior to her talk beginning at 6:15 p.m. The lecture and reception are free.




Literacy organization to train volunteers


The Carson City Literacy Volunteers Organization will be conducting training sessions for those interested in tutoring adults in reading and writing English from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 23.


All four classes must be completed for certification, and take place in Conference Room A at the Nevada State Library and Archives on Stewart Street. Registration is $25. For information call 885-1010.




'Vapor Trails' free movie presentation at railroad museum


The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located at 2180 S. Carson St., will host filmmaker Peter Abramowitsch as he screens his "Vapor Trails - Saving the Last Steam Rail Service in Europe" at 7 p.m. Wednesday.


This film documents the last remaining regular steam service in Europe.

'Talking With the Police' at WNCC


The public can talk with Carson City deputy Daniel Gonzales, a Police Academy graduate, from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Marlette Hall of the Cedar Building of Western Nevada Community College.


In addition, there will be no night classes at the High-Tech Center.

Lyon County


Stagecoach, Silver Springs seniors get transportation


Lyon County Senior Services is now providing transportation for seniors aged 60 and older in the Stagecoach and Silver Springs area. Transportation for meals and activities is provided.


Meals are a $2 suggested donation. A ride both ways is 50 cents.

Misfits Theatre to hold open auditions


The Misfits Theatre Group will be holding open auditions for roles in its new '40's melodrama "High Jinks on the Home Front, or Who Gets the Gizmo" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dayton branch of the Lyon County Library.


Rehearsals will be Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons, with performances Nov. 10, 11, 17 and 18.

Booths available for 'Big Yard Sale'


The Storey County Senior Center in Virginia City has vendor tables available for its "Big Yard Sale" to be held Sept. 23.


Full tables are $7.50, half tables are $5.
