Douglas girls fall to Reed

It was going to take its best offensive effort of the season and some good breaks along the way for the Douglas girls' basketball team to have a shot at pulling off an enormous upset at Reed in the first round of the Northern 4A Regional playoffs Wednesday night.

The Lady Tigers got neither as Reed jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first three and a half minutes of the game on its way to a 74-33 win in Sparks.

The Douglas defense, as it has been for the majority of the second half of the season, was solid early on, forcing a number of key turnovers and keeping Reed's outside shooters from cutting loose.

Douglas was unable to convert those opportunities into any kind of extended runs on the opposite end, however, and Reed simply waited until it could get rolling on offense. The Raiders went on 9-0, 13-0 and 10-0 runs in the game, mostly on transition opportunities after Douglas turnovers and solid free-throw shooting.

The Tigers did manage to outscore the Raiders in the third quarter, 14-13, but Reed put the game away for good in the fourth.

Monica Knight led the Tigers with 15 points, Jessica Waggoner added five and Autumn Burtt and Felicia Imelli each scored four. Kaela Horse scored three and Sarah Hartley and Bridget Maestretti each scored two.
