Sanchez wins two events

Carson High's Kayla Sanchez picked up right where she left off from last season, winning two events at the Holiday Inn/VS Invitational hosted by the University of Nevada on Saturday at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Sanchez led a strong performance by several athletes from Carson and Galena. Carson's Alex McAlman and Jeremy Gray and Galena's Dan Geib also won events.

In the open/club division, Sanchez won the 200-meter dash in an outstanding early season time of 25.89 seconds. She also won the 55 meters in 7.38. Sanchez won three state titles last year as a freshman.

Galena's Alyssa Abbott took second in the one-mile run (5:24.14) and the 800 (2:24.56). Carson's Gloria Sosa was seventh in 2:38.03.

McAlman, who has signed to compete in track for Nevada, won the women's shot put with a throw of just over 37 feet.

In the college/invitational division, Geib beat former Galena teammate Stephen Pottey in the 3,000 meters. Geib won in 8:59.06 and Pottey was second in 9:04.50. Geib also took second in the open/club one-mile in 4:38.24.

Gray won the open/club 200 in 23.09 and and took fourth in the 55 meters in 6.92. Carson's Floyd Hernandez was 10th in 7.19 and Carson's Sean Costella was 18th in 7.34.

Galena's Tony Fritsche had an outstanding effort in the pole vault, taking second at 15-6. In the open/club B division, Hernandez was fourth in the 200 in 24.91.

In the collegiate/invitational division, Pottey took fourth in the one-mile in 4:29.74 and Carson gradaute Matt Moore was 10th in the 400 in 56.04. Galena's Bryan Tibaduiaza was sixth in the open/club B division in the one-mile run in 5:04.12.
