Public-safety hazards along Hot Springs Road will be improved with $867,000 in federal and local funding, a Carson City official said Friday.

Sidewalks, curbs and gutters will be constructed along the half-mile of roadway between Carson and Roop streets starting early next year. The existing ditch on the northwest side of Hot Springs Road will be covered and converted into a storm drain. The ditch is a hazard because it is so close to the road.

"There is a lot of pedestrian traffic on Hot Springs, a lot of mobile home parks and a lot of kids and no place for them to walk," city Engineer Larry Werner said. "It's a public-safety issue."

The city will receive $354,000 in federal dollars funded through the Nevada Department of Transportation. The city is covering the remaining $513,000. It will be a major project because water lines will have to be relocated.

On Thursday, Carson City supervisors are expected to approve a stewardship agreement with NDOT that would allow the city to administer this project using federal funds. Hot Springs Road is a state-maintained road.

Carson City will design the improvements then contract out the service in late summer. Werner said the city believes it can complete the project quicker than if NDOT took the reins.
