Alex Updegrove, a junior from Carson High School, is the recipient of the "United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth" award, sponsored by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs in conjunction with the Nevada Department of Education.

Alex was chosen as a recipient, with two other Nevada students, based on character, academic success, leadership ability, extracurricular activities and interest in community and world affairs. The award is worth about $1,500 and provides winners with a 10-day trip in July to observe and study the United Nations.

Dean's list at Gonzaga

Gretchen Elizabeth Taylor, a senior at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., made the dean's list for the fall semester. She is from Carson City and was among the 592 students to make the list for which students must earn between a 3.5-3.69 grade point average.

Kindergarten registration under way

Kindergarten registration for the Carson City School District began Feb. 27. The following are needed to register a child: a birth certificate and immunization record, including hepatitis vaccination must be submitted; the child must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 30 of the 2006-07 school year; proof of residency (power bill, gas bill, water bill, voter registration, etc.) in Carson City School District.

Silver City Volunteer Library news

Silver City residents are invited to drop in for coffee and books at the Silver City Volunteer Library from 2-4 p.m. Sundays at the Silver City Fire House.

Thanks to Lyon County libraries, the Silver City library has begun receiving a number of current magazines, including 'Natural History' and 'Skipping Stones.' Among nonfiction, Stephen Jay Gould's "The Spread of Excellence from Plato to Darwin" is now available.

On the recommendation of a local reader, the library has acquired an Oprah's Book Club novel called "Fall On Your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald. For those interested in Oprah's Book Club, the library has many of the novels, including: "A Map of the World" by Jane Hamilton, "A Virtuous Woman" and "Ellen Foster" by Kaye Gibbons, "Daughter of Fortune" by Isabel Allende and many many more.

Puerto Rico signs smoke-free workplace law

Puerto Rico Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila signed a bill recently that makes Puerto Rico the 13th U.S. state/district/territory to go smokefree, joining California, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Montana, Vermont, Washington, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.

The law eliminates tobacco smoke in bars, casinos, and other workplaces, as well as in private cars with children under 13 years old as passengers.
