Tobacco-use prevention group dinner set

A group of young people in tobacco-prevention groups from Lyon and Storey counties will meet at Dayton Round Table Pizza at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

New members are welcome to join Youth Educating Teens on Tobacco Issues at the restaurant. Please bring $5 for pizza. Silver City youth who are interested can call their local leader, Sylvia Thomas at 884-4671, or call Healthy Communities Coalition at 246-7550.

March for Meals holds fundraiser

The Kiwanis March for Meals Spaghetti Dinner and Bingo Night fundraiser will begin at 4 p.m. March 24 at the Dayton Senior Center, 320 Old Dayton Valley Road. Cost is $5. Bingo cards are $10 each or six for $5. There will be movies for kids with popcorn and juice. All donations will go to the March for Meals program. Call 246-6210.

Lions Club holds free vision screening

Free vision screening will be offered from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 1 to residents in Dayton.

Primarily intended for students, this screening will identify problems that might lead to academic issues resulting from improper vision development.

Chinese focus of Silver City booth

The Silver City Task Force will host a booth at Family Learning Night at Dayton Elementary School from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The booth will feature fun activities and handouts listing where to discover more about the lives of the Chinese on the Comstock in the 1800s.

Silver City will focus on the subject during many events and programs during the summer of 2006, including a presentation by renowned University of Nevada, Las Vegas scholar Sue Fawn Chung. Call Quest Lakes at 847-0742.

Horsemen hold confidence clinic

The Lyon County Horseman's Association will be holding a clinic entitled "Confidence When You Ride - Fear and Anxiety around horses" from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the McAtee Building in Silver Springs. This class is good for beginners and free.

Virginia City

St. Patrick's Day parade set

The Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band will be the grand marshals at the annual Virginia City St. Patrick's Day Parade down C Street at noon Sunday.

The band was chosen in honor of its 12th-place finish in the World Championship Pipe Band Competition in Scotland last year.

Leading the parade will be a color guard from American Legion Post 56 of Carson City. Other expected entries are the Sons and Daughters of Erin, Beauregard the Car-driving Dog and the Comstock Living Legends. Call 847-0311.

Storey County holds drug-awareness night

A drug awareness night will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, in the Hugh Gallagher Elementary School multipurpose room, residents can learn the signs and risks of methamphetamine use, as well as how to get help.

The Community Chest will provide free baby-sitting for the event.
