The Dayton High girls basketball team overcame the loss of its point guard and a fourth quarter comeback to pull out a 36-33 win over Yerington on Tuesday.
Dayton improved to 4-2 in the Northern 3A. The Dust Devils were playing without point guard Brittany Hill, who was out with an illness. Hill is Dayton's second leading scorer.
But freshman Bree DeHaven filled in admirably for Hill, scoring seven points. "Somebody had to step up and get those points that she normally gets," said Dayton coach Shari Andreasen about replacing Hill.
Dayton's leading scorer Rebecca Monzello scored 11 points, Melony Cox had nine points, Maria Weeks had three points and Amanda Brandenburg, Stephanie Greer and Melissa Karges all added two points.
Dayton led 14-8 after one quarter, 20-13 at halftime and 27-22 after three quarters before Yerington came back to take a two-point lead with three minutes left. But the Dust Devils were able to recover for the win.
"I was very pleased with the girls," Andreasen said. "They played their hearts out. They never gave up. The girls held their composure."
