The Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans has organized rallies in both Carson City and Las Vegas to urge the state Board of Pharmacy to ignore the Nevada Attorney General's opinion and proceed with a plan to help Nevadans obtain cheaper drugs from Canada.
The board is meeting today in Las Vegas to discuss the issue. Assembly Majority Leader Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, will attend in the south and Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, in the north along with several other lawmakers.
Attorney General George Chanos said, in his opinion the law directing the state board to certify Canadian drug suppliers to provide drugs to Nevada customers is flawed and that the plan can't go forward.
"I can't believe the Attorney General is so blatantly putting the needs of special interests over the needs of seniors," said Mike Aupperle, vice president of the alliance. "This program won't just help seniors, it will help any Nevadan struggling with prescription drug costs."
Both rallies are set for 8:15 a.m. outside the state's Sawyer building in Las Vegas and the Nevada Legislature in Carson City.
Seniors will also present about 1,000 signatures gathered online by Nevadans asking the board of pharmacy to allow the program.
