Carson City

Strings in the Schools to perform first concert

Strings in the Schools, a new after-school pilot program, will present its first concert at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 26 at Seeliger Elementary School. The group consists of 70 string players from all Carson City School District elementary and middle schools.

Students from St. Teresa of Avila School and home-schooled students, will also perform several pieces.

The concert is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and preference will be given to parents.

Garden center offers seminar on pond installation

Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City is offering an in-depth three-day seminar on personal pond installation. The dates will be Sunday, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12.

This seminar is limited to 16 people and the cost is $20. Reservations are required. For information or to make reservations, call 882-8600.

Nevada State Museum offers special tour

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is featuring a behind-the-scenes tour of its natural history collection which highlights some of the state's plants and wildlife not currently on public display. The tour, led by George Baumgardner, curator of natural history, will offer an up-close look at some of the museum's hidden treasurers at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Jan. 27.

Douglas County

4-H offers public speaking class

Cooperative Extension is hosting a free class entitled "Speaking With Confidence 4-H Program." 4-5 p.m., Mondays from Jan. 30 - April 3

This nine-week course is designed to help children discard their fears about speaking in public, and teaches them how to present to groups.

Interested youth do not need to be a current member of 4-H or pay any fees; however, registration is required as enrollment is limited. For information or to register, call the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension in Douglas County at 782-9960.

Senior Center hosts Alzheimer's workshop

The Nevada Caregiver Support Center and the Douglas County Senior Center will host a workshop from 2-3 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadows Lane, Gardnerville, for family and professional caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease or related memory problems.

Students will learn strategies for managing challenging behaviors such as wandering, repetitive questions or statements and angry outbursts.

This class is free for family caregivers, and costs $10 for professional caregivers. For information call 784-4335.
