Carson City

Volunteers needed to teach reading

The Carson City Literacy Volunteer Organization will conduct a training session for people interested in tutoring adults in reading and writing English. The classes will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 22 and 23, and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Feb. 25 and March 4. You must attend all the classes to be certified.

Applications available for CNA preparation series

Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare's Education Center will hold a certified nursing-assistant course from March 6-April 13.

This series prepares students for the State CNA Certification Exam.

The cost is $350, which includes tuition and books.

Applications for the series are available through the end of this month.

Supplemental teaching class offered in Carson

In the "Special Problems in EDS: Helping Struggling Readers, Grades 6-12" class, participants will learn to conduct a reading-level analysis and be introduced to techniques for evaluating students' reading.

Class is 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. April 8 and 29 at the Nevada State Library and Archives, 100 N. Stewart St.

The course fee is $102 for one undergraduate credit or $140 for one graduate credit.

Spring turkey-hunting applications available

Applications and regulations brochures for Nevada's spring turkey hunts are available at Nevada Department of Wildlife offices, sporting goods stores and at www.ndow.org.

Tags, 115 resident and 10 nonresident, are available to hunt turkeys in Nevada.

Applications must be received by mail or online at Wildlife Administration Services in Fallon by 5 p.m. on Feb. 6 to be eligible for the tag drawing.

Carson mint program at Reno park

The Nevada State Museum once housed a U.S. mint. Historians will expose the treasures that still lie within in a program called "Treasures of the Mint," a free family program at 3 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

Visitors will also be able to discuss the Nevada quarter with special guest Bob Nylen, curator of history for the museum.

Douglas County

DAWG hosts adoption event

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 4, Douglas Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) is sponsoring "Super Dog Saturday," an adoption event at the Douglas County Animal Shelter, 921 Pinenut Road, Gardnerville.

There will be a free spay or neuter with most adult dog and cat adoptions.

Also included in the festivities is a free tailgate party with chili and other refreshments.
