Lyon County

County seeking basketball refs

The Central Lyon County Parks and Recreation Department needs 18 referees for its league basketball season.

Referees will be paid $10 per game and work Monday-Thursday from Feb. 6 to March 9.

Virginia City

'Hard times' party to benefit Comstock District events

A "hard times" party will be held Jan. 27 at the Ponderosa Saloon in Virginia City, to benefit the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce Events Fund.The party is a potluck event

The chamber puts on many of the historic mining town's events and holds occasional fundraisers to pay for them. Hard times parties were common in the 1930s as a way of raising funds.

Historic homes wanted for remodeling television show

HGTV's "If Walls Could Talk" will be coming to Nevada within the next couple of months.

"If Walls Could Talk," a long-running, hit series on Home and Garden Television, is looking for homeowners in Nevada to be featured on the show. If you have renovated a historic home and made any amazing discoveries they want to talk to you.

Or if you know of anyone who may fit the show's description, you can enter them. The series premiered in 1998 and has aired over 150 episodes and visited all 50 states since.

Scottish clans celebrate Burns' birthday in Northern Nevada

The Nevada Society of Scottish Clans will have a major event with dinner, scotch tasting, Celtic music, and two bagpipe bands to commemorate Robert Burns, poet laureate of Scotland. The dinner will be held starting at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 at Circus Circus in Reno.

Donnie MacDonald will emcee the event. Kilts and tartans are not required but are encouraged.

The public is invited to attend, but reservations are required. The cost is $40 per person.
