Carson City

NDOT to discuss highways 395, 50

The Nevada Department of Transportation will conduct a public open house to present and receive comments on potential aesthetic enhancement opportunities for several Northern Nevada highway corridors, including Highway 395 and Highway 50 East.

The meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the Carson High School Library.

Myths of Ireland featured in exhibit

The visual-arts exhibition "Beyond the Myth: Watercolors by Karen Kreyeski" will be at Capital City Arts Initiative's Caffeine! Gallery at Comma Coffee through February.

A free reception will be held from 5-6 p.m. Wednesday at Comma Coffee, 312 Carson St.

The show features a vivid display of works inspired by insightful personal interpretations of the native myths of Ireland. During a recent journey to Ireland to reclaim her heritage, Kreyeski researched many native myths. The Irish myth of the mystical white horse captured her attention. The horse can guide warriors to the "other side" or mischievously mislead unsuspecting travelers. For additional information, go to www.arts-initiative.org.

Valentine's Day ravioli dinner/dance

A Valentine's Day Homemade Ravioli dinner will be held at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. from 5:30-8 p.m. Feb. 11, followed by dancing to the music of the Gardners, original song stylists based in Carson City.

All proceeds will benefit the Central Lyon County Youth Connection's youth programs and projects. Tickets are $30 for dinner and dance and $10 for dinner only at the door, Community Threads Thrift Store in Dayton and the Dayton Community Center.

The Gardners - Bob and Nancy - perform 1960s, '70s and '80s music as well as the current Top 40 tunes and some country and country rock.

They have been performing together throughout Nevada and California at casinos and dance clubs since 1979.

Sign language classes offered

American Sign Language classes will be held at the Jones Agency Insurance Office, 655 Highway 50 East, Suite 4A in Dayton.

The cost is $90 and the first section of classes are 6-8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through March 15. The second section runs will be from March 27 to May 17. Call 246-7048.

Virginia City

'Hard-times' party to benefit Comstock District events

A "hard-times" party will be held Jan. 27 at the Ponderosa Saloon in Virginia City, to benefit the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce Events Fund. The party is a potluck event

The chamber puts on many of the historic mining town's events and holds occasional fundraisers to pay for them.

Hard-times parties were common in the 1930s as a way of raising funds.

Tourism University workshops planned

Nevada Commission on Tourism will hold all-day Nevada Tourism University workshops beginning at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 7 at the Delta Saloon, 18 South C St. Virginia City.

Workshop subjects are "Finding Your Vendor," "Chinese Travelers: A New Outbound Market," "Seven Habits of Highly Successful Tourism Professionals" and "Diversity Marketing."

Gibbons to speak at Lincoln Day Dinner

U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., will be the featured speaker at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner hosted by the Lyon County Republican Central Committee Feb. 4 at the Casino West Convention Center, Main Street, Yerington.

Tickets are $30 for the steak dinner, which begins at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a no-host bar at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Kathleen's Shop on Main Street in Yerington or by phone at 775-463-4455. Reservations will be taken for tables of 10.
