VC hotel to open in the summer

Known for its quaint Victorian bed and breakfast lodging, Virginia City's first multi-million dollar hotel will open for business this summer. The $6.8 million AmeriHost Hotel will be a behemoth on E Street

"We've already starting taking reservations," said Hugh R. Marshall, president of Silverland USA, which owns the hotel.

So far it has taken six reservations, and the hotel doesn't even have an official phone number yet. The AmeriHost will employ 25-35 for the first-floor casino, hotel and bar. It opens June 6.

Marshall said his three-story, 44,000-square-foot hotel will have 68 rooms and a swimming pool. It's located along the route of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad and will overlook the Comstock Park Arena, which is used for the camel races.

Marshall's second, larger Virginia City hotel on D Street will be a $15 million Ramada Inn Express. It will be 120,000 square feet with 120 rooms scheduled to begin construction in about three years. Marshall plans to construct a four-story tower in this hotel.

The Advertising Association of Northern Nevada is requesting entries for the 2006 Addy Awards. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 27 at the "turning-in" party at CLM Design from 5-9 p.m.

The 2006 Addy Awards Show will be March 3 at Harrah's Reno Convention Center. Viewing begins at 5:30 p.m. The awards presentation is at 8 p.m. Cost is $50 for members and $55 for non-members. The theme for this year's event is a "Day at the Races" with costume, hat or black tie encouraged.

The Addy Awards are conducted through the American Advertising Federation, a non-profit trade association representing more than 50,000 professionals in the advertising industry, including agencies, advertisers and media companies.

Eric James has joined CFA, Inc., a multi-disciplinary consulting firm in Reno specializing in planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture and surveying.

At CFA, James will assist project managers and professional engineers in the preparation of civil design plans, such as grading, drainage, hydrology and hydraulics, geometric design, utility design and technical calculations.

Prior to CFA, James worked for the University of Nevada, Reno as a research assistant while pursuing his master's degree. His research focused on a filter optimization project at the South Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility. James also has experience with erosion control on a Spooner Summit project.

Gary Loveman, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Harrah's Entertainment Inc. (NYSE:HET), was named best CEO in the gaming and lodging industry by Institutional Investor magazine. Loveman has received the award every year since assuming the position of CEO in 2003.

CEOs in 62 industries were honored in this year's competition, including: Frederick Smith, FedEx Corp.; Lee Raymond, ExxonMobil Corp.; Arthur Levinson, Genentech; Richard Parsons, Time Warner; Edward Zander, Motorola; Terry Semel, Yahoo!; Steven Ballmer, Microsoft Corp.; and John Chambers, Cisco Systems.

Selections were based on the votes of more than 1,700 analysts and portfolio managers at about 500 money management and brokerage firms. Respondents were asked to rank the top three CEOs in the sectors for which they had responsibility.

The Carson Valley Inn in Minden announced its employee Inn-the-Spotlight recipients for the fourth quarter of 2005.

Casino division recipients were Loretta Stender, table games dealer; Sam Dolan, poker room dealer; Steve May, slot technician. In the food division, those recognized were Norma Reece, Katie's Country Kitchen food server; Bernard Jones, cook; Karen Baker, food server. Hotel division honorees included Candice Frank, front desk; Ray Hammond, engineer.

The Inn's Supervisor Inn-the-Spotlight for the fourth quarter was Mary Steinman, hotel front desk shift supervisor.

The Carson Valley Inn is located on U.S. Highway 395 in Minden.

The Nevada Commission on Tourism launched "Nevada Welcomes the World," a new hospitality program to distribute cards bearing simple visitor greetings in six languages.

Words on the cards, such as welcome, please, thank you and goodbye, are printed in Mandarin, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Each word includes phonetic English pronunciation.

Other words on the card are yes, no, you are welcome, and the courtesy titles of Mr., Mrs. and Miss.

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada named Celeste Eisenberg as public relations associate.

Eisenberg will provide public relations and media relations to increase opportunities for new regional business expansions, start-ups and company expansions. She will assist with EDAWN's local public relations programs, including special events and increasing awareness of economic development benefits to the Northern Nevada community.

Eisenberg recently relocated to Reno from Boston, where she worked as an account executive with Schwartz Communications, one of the nation's leading public relations agencies focused on high-tech and health-care companies.
