Josef Waxler, 89, a 19-year Carson City resident, died Jan. 23, 2006, at his home.

He was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Cambria County, Pa., to Nathan and Amelia Statson Waxler.

Mr. Waxler was a graduate of many maritime schools and achieved the rank of lieutenant.

He was an electrical contractor in Southern California for more than 40 years.

Mr. Waxler served in the merchant marines for many years. During World War II, his ship was torpedoed on March 29, 1942, and he was adrift for two weeks before being rescued.

He was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.

Among his survivors are his longtime companion, Lavina Atkinson of Carson City; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospice of Reno.

Inurnment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, Calif., at a later date.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
