Starved children need support of community

I want to thank everyone who contacted me concerning my column last week. The response was overwhelming from our community and people all over the United States.

I would stress again, if you would like to help the children who were found starved on Jan. 19, please donate to the Second Chance Fund set up by the Carson City Sheriff's Department. You can go to any Bank of America Branch and mention the account's name.

These children are looking at a long road to recovery, and they will need so many things that are not possible to know just yet.

I also want to thank the woman who brought in the complete set of "Harry Potter" movies.

Also, thank you for all the donations of clothing and homemade quilts for all five children and to Southwest Gas Corp.

A special thank you to Dr. Palazzolo for offering his services. Many doctors and professionals in our town have generously opened their hearts and offices to help the children when the time comes.

Maud Naroll asked me how she could help children in the community and what they needed. I work very closely with the nurses at each school, and they are the front line for seeing and helping children daily.

They always need toothbrushes, toothpaste and hygiene kits for all ages, warm winter jackets and gloves. Some of the school nurses need crackers for children who come to school late and miss the free and reduced-fee breakfasts.

All these children are innocent victims of circumstances. We, as a community, can come together and care for them. It's easy.

I also received a very moving e-mail from a mother I helped a while back. She thanked me for the school supplies I got for her daughter when she didn't have the money to purchase them.

She stated that between Advocates to End Domestic Violence, Empire Elementary School and the Carson City Homeless Program, we made the difference in her life. She went on to say she is teaching her children to care and give back now that she is doing much better in a new town and a better life.

Make the difference: help a child.

Finally, back to the community events that also help so many.

The seventh annual Feast of Chocolate sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Capital Branch is Feb. 18.

Proceeds go toward scholarships for girls to continue their education after high school. So if you love chocolate and a great cause, this event has it all.
