Carson City

Diabetes cooking class at Carson High restaurant

In a series of four classes, residents with diabetes or who have family members with diabetes can learn how to cut fat, sugar and sodium from meals, without cutting taste. Participants will take home recipe booklets, watch cooking demonstrations, and try out good-tasting food made with less fat, sugar and salt.

Classes will be taught by professionals from Sierra Dietetics, the Carson High Culinary Arts program, and the Washoe Tribal Health Center. Cost of the series is $25. Classes will be from 6-7:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 9 at the Carson High culinary restaurant.

Cooperative Extension hosts 4-H fabric sale

The annual 4-H Fabric Sale will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Feb. 11 and from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 12 at the Carson City Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall at Fuji Park. All proceeds go to benefit scholarship programs for 4-H students.

Most fabric at the sale is $1 a yard, and admission is free. Volunteers will also be accepting fabric and craft donations from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Exhibit Hall. Receipts are available for tax purposes. Call 887-2252.

Carson River Advisory Committee to meet

The Carson River Advisory Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Planned actions include: possible recommendation of the Comprehensive Master Plan to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors and a request for funding to update the Carson River element of the plan.

Dayton High freshman Julian Ballatore-South is looking for help to earn money to become a People to People student ambassador. He's asking for donations of aluminum cans to recycle to earn money for a trip to China this summer.

Two drop-off points are in Dayton: Comstock Pizza, on Highway 50 just west of the traffic light; and the Dayton Veterinary hospital on Enterprise Way, just off Highway 50.

Senior Center offers daily chores assistance for homebound seniors

The Douglas County Senior Center is looking for homebound senior citizens who may need assistance with daily household chores such as basic cleaning, laundry, shopping and limited personal care.

If you are 60 years or older and do not have an able-bodied adult living with you, and you are unable to do your daily household chores due to physical or mental illness, you may be able to receive homemaker service. The suggested donation for service is $2 per hour.
