FERNLEY - A 21-year-old man who allegedly pulled a gun on a 10-year-old neighbor boy and then on a deputy was shot and killed by the officer Tuesday afternoon.

Joshua Brinkley was pronounced dead inside his home in the Trails End trailer park in Fernley about 3:30 p.m.

According to Lyon County Sheriff's Capt. Allen Veil, deputies were responding to a report of a man with a gun. When they arrived at the scene in the 100 block of Dallas Street, one deputy waited outside the 25-foot trailer while another entered.

"That's when the shooting occurred," Veil said.

Veil said the deputy reported Brinkley pulled out a handgun. Several shots appear to have been fired. It's unclear if the shots came from one or two guns, Veil said.

The deputy, a 20-year-old veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. He told investigators Brinkley pulled a gun on him inside the trailer.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office was brought in to assist in the investigation.

Veil said Brinkley has a criminal record with the Lyon County Sheriff's Department, but those prior contacts have been minor.

He said the deputy involved will be given counseling and debriefed later. This is this officer's first shooting since being with the department.
