A memorial service for George Zappettini, 84, a resident of Tuolumne, Calif., for 28 years, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Terzich & Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose Ave., Sonora, Calif.

Mr. Zappettini died June 30, 2006 at home. He was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Italy to Louis and Angela Zappettini.

He was the first Nevada state forester with the Nevada Division of Forestry; owned two nurseries, at which he researched, grew, and sold worldwide hybridized poplar trees; and was a former University Extension agent for Lyon and Nye county.

He was a conservationist and served on the Federal Smokey Bear Commission. He was a member of the Farm Bureau.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II under Gen. George Patton.

Among his survivors are his wife of 54 years, Sara Zappettini of Tuolumne; daughters Jan Sullivan and Karen Brunhall, both of Carson City, and Gina Jones of Sonora; son, Robert Zappettini of Carson City; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Italy and Sonora, Calif.

Memorial donations may be made to the Unity Church in the Mother Lode, 326 W. Stockton, Sonora, CA, 95370; or to the Alano Club of Sonora, P.O. Box 117, Standard, CA, 95373.
