The Henderson watch continues

RENO - Everett Stuhl hasn't played professional baseball since going 4-6 with a 5.97 ERA for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings back in 2003.

Stuhl, who has been out of baseball with a bad right elbow, was signed by the Reno Silver Sox on July 4 and was in uniform for Wednesday night's game against San Diego.

Stull, who pitched for the Expos, Brewers and Braves, is only the second Silver Sox player to have previous Major League experience. Marcus Jensen, the Silver Sox catcher, previously played for the San Francisco Giants.

Stull was 2-5 with a 6.59 ERA in 57 1/3 innings. He started six games and struck out 42 batters.

"We'll find out (whether he has anything left)," Manager Les Lancaster said. "When he was re-habbing his elbow, the trainer who I know spoke highly of him. With his experience ... we'll see when he gets into baseball shape.

"I think you can to a certain point (get by on guile). You still have to have a little bit of stuff. As long as you know how to pitch and can keep the ball down, it can get you a long way."

THE HENDERSON WATCH

According to Lancaster, there is still no word on whether future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson will return to the Golden Baseball League.

It has been rumored that Henderson was trying to decide between the Reno Silver Sox and the Chico Outlaws. He wants to stay as close as possible to his home in the Bay Area.

"I haven't heard anything," Lancaster said. "I know he hopes he has a chance to be picked up. I don't think it will happen, but I could be wrong.

"Our young guys could learn. It would be tremendous to them. They could learn how to run and lead off."

Lancaster said the league may be looking for the best fit before it determines what team(s) would be best suited for Henderson.

"I'm sure Rickey will have the final say-so," Lancaster said.

Dwight Dortsch, the team's general manager, said he hopes to know something by Thursday or Friday. Dortsch said Henderson's coaching contract ended yesterday with the New York Mets.

WORTH NOTING

Hideki Nagasaka (1-0, 6.05 ERA) pitches against San Diego's Justin Ottman (2-2, 2.72) tonight in the final game of the homestand ... Victor Hall, who was signed by the Yankees after a great start with the Silver Sox, is currently hitting in the low 200s at Single-A Tampa. Despite his absence, Hall is still No. 2 in hitting at .365 and No.1 in stolen bases with 15.
