Art association critique at Brewery Arts Center


The Nevada Artists Association will be holding an art critique by Robert Schimmel from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery, 449 W. King St. The public is invited. Call 885-7072.




Hear 'Jazz under the Stars' in Comma's Courtyard


The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams will be holding an evening of "Big Band Jazz Under the Stars" from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Admission is $5 general, $4 for members of the Mile High Jazz Band Association, and free for those ages 18 and under. Swing-dance instruction is from 6-7:30 p.m. and is $5. Master Gardener orientation class slated


A mandatory orientation meeting for those who may be interested in becoming Master Gardeners will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cooperative Extension office, 2621 Northgate Lane Suite 12. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's fall Master Gardener training program will run Sept. 5 through Nov. 1 classes are 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. RPEN to hold picnic


The Retired Public Employees of Nevada, Carson City Chapter's annual picnic will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ross Gold Park on Snyder Street, near fire station No. 3. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided, and members are asked to bring a side dish to share.

Local author to read from book at railroad museum


Families and the public are invited to attend a free program by author Ellen Hopkins as she reads from her book "Tarnished Legacy," a nonfiction story for children about the Comstock Lode, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Call 687-6953.


Natives and Newcomers hold picnic at the Nugget


The Carson City Natives and Newcomers Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Carson Nugget banquet room. Instead of a regular buffet luncheon there will be a "picnic in the Nugget park." Members are encouraged to wear casual dress such as shorts, jeans, T-shirts and tank tops, but no bikinis.

Contraband to play at Bartley Ranch


Local doctors will take time off from their practices to perform Celtic and bluegrass music at a free outdoor concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bartley Ranch Regional Park's Western Heritage Interpretive Center as part of the Evenings on the Ranch family program series. All Evenings on the Ranch programs are free of charge.

Head injury support group for families and survivors


The Head Injury Association of Northern Nevada provides monthly support group meetings for families and survivors of brain injury. The meetings are the second Thursday of each month at the Washoe Rehabilitation Hospital, 555 Gould St., in Reno. Meetings are typically from 7-8:30 p.m.
