A local group plans to install a veterans memorial in Lone Mountain Cemetery.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors last week awarded the American Legion High Desert Post 56 $500 - about half of the cost - for a wooden, three-sided memorial with display windows to place in the cemetery near the flagpoles.

It will exhibit names supplied by Legionnaires and other local veterans groups, along with other documents and memorabilia related to military service, said Donald Atkins, post commander.

"It's a beautiful area," Atkins said. "Well-kept and very green."

Art Baer, also a Legionnaire and member of the color guard, is the builder of the display case. Some of his other work can be seen at the James Lee Memorial Park in North Douglas County. He built the three kiosks there.

Legionnaires are accepting donations to pay the remainder of the cost for the kiosk, and for items to place in the display, Atkins said.

The group is planning to have it up by the second week of August. A dedication ceremony will occur soon after the memorial is installed, Atkins said.

"Their families will be able to cherish it forever," he said.
