Two paragliders killed near Mt. Rose

Two men died following a paragliding accident near Mount Rose Ski Area on Saturday.

The men were flying in tandem and apparently crashed into the mountainside at about 11 a.m. while paragliding near Slide Mountain and Mount Rose Ski Resort's east bowl, according to KTVN Channel 2 in Reno.

Washoe County Sheriff's detectives had not released the names of the victims as of Sunday afternoon.

One of the victims was a paragliding instructor who was in his 30s and from Northern Nevada, according to KTVN. The instructor died at the scene.

The other, a paragliding student, was described by authorities at the scene as a male in his 20s. He was airlifted to Washoe Medical Center, where he later died, according to KTVN.

Hang-gliders and paragliders at the scene told the TV station that winds were calm at the hour of the crash.

In August 2004, a Truckee man died in a paragliding accident after he launched from the east bowl of Mount Rose Ski Area. He was killed when he hit a hill off of the Bordertown exit near Reno Stead Air Force Base.
