Residents who wish to vote in the Aug. 15 primary election have a week left to register - but now they must do so in person at the clerk-recorder's office.

The deadline for registering to vote is July 25. Proof of identity and residence, such as photo identification and utility bills, is required from those seeking to register.

So far, 27,037 people are on the city's voter rolls, and 24,810 of them are classified as "active," meaning they have voted recently.

The remainder, 2,227, are "inactive" voters, people who haven't taken part in the last general election, which was November 2004. The elections office is waiting to see whether these people vote during the next November election. If not, they will be purged from the registration list, not be on the rolls in 2008 and will have to re-register, said Alan Glover, clerk-recorder and head of city elections.

If these people try to vote provisionally at that time, it won't count.

Republicans remain the community's majority party, with 12,186 compared to the Democrats with 8,407, according to numbers compiled Monday by the elections office.

There were 23,806 registered voters in 2004. And in 2000, there were 20,706 registered voters.

This year, for example, there are fewer nonpartisan voters than in 2004: 3,914 versus 3,680, a reduction of 234. This is not because these voters are lacking in choice.

"Nonpartisans in Carson get more to vote on than in most Nevada counties," Glover said.

The elections office, 885 East Musser St., Suite 1025, is open weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. On July 24 and 25, however, extended hours will allow people to register until 9 p.m. For details, call 887-2260 or visit www.carson-city.nv.us/clerk/elections.

Carson City Board of Supervisors Ward 3, the sheriff, assessor, treasurer, clerk-recorder, justice of the peace department 2, and two out of four school district trustee positions will be the Carson races on the primary ballot.

The two candidates who receive the most votes during the primary election continue on to the general election. Any candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the vote will be declared the winner, making inclusion on the Nov. 7 general election ballot unnecessary.

All of the local seats are nonpartisan. Sample ballots should begin reaching voters this week.
