Tigersharks strong in Junior Olympics

The Carson Tigersharks took 10 swimmers to the Pacific Junior Olympics held over the weekend in San Jose and all had oustanding efforts.

Among the highlights were Barbara Perkins, Abby Niehoff, Julie Asire and Tatum Boehnke sweeping the titles in the girls 15-18 400-meter medley and freestyle relays. Niehoff was a triple champion as she also won the 200 butterfly and the 1,500 free. The Tigersharks went 1-2 in the 1,500 free as Boehnke took second.

Kevin Dyer was also a triple champion in 15-18 boys as he won the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles and took second in the 1,500 free. Niehoff was also second in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 freestyles.

"I am very proud of them and extremely happy with the results," Tigershark coach Gaby Phalan said. "All of htem achieved best times in at least one of their events and we had several finalists."

Phalan also said Abigail Pittman and Vanessa Rauch had "great swims" in their first Junior Olympics. She added that Matt Grunert and Perkins swam to personal bests in nearly all of their races, scoring extra points for the team. Results from the meet were:
