Nevada still strong in rodeo

Fallon's Bailey Corkill has ridden into third place overall in the points standing for rookie cowgirl at the National High School Rodeo Association Finals in Springfield, Ill.

Corkill, who will be a sophomore at Churchill County High School in the fall, has 90 points. She trails first-place Kale Miller of St. Anthony, Idaho, who has 185 points, and Klancy Shope, a Louisiana cowgirl from Longville who has 140 points.

Corkill's team roping partner, Dakota Eldridge of Elko, is in an eight/nine split for all-around rookie cowboy with 90 points. Both ropers finished seventh Tuesday morning in team roping with a time of 8.52 seconds.

Elko cowboy James Barton won Tuesday morning's cutting with 222.5 points, and he sits second overall. Austin Adams of Logandale finished second, and Austen Vaughan of Yerington came in 12th. Another northeastern Nevada athlete, Marc Morrison of Wells, placed seventh in steer wrestling in 6.494 seconds.

Olie Fowler of Fallon came in 13th in pole bending in 21.513, while Steve Hacker of Battle Mountain garnered 52 points in bareback riding for 11th place.

In Monday night's action, team ropers Hayley Turley of Las Vegas and Quinn Mori of Tuscarora placed second in 8.314. Cody Robinson of Las Vegas had a third-place effort in tie-down roping in 9.646. Two girls placed in cutting's top 20. Chelsea Hooper of Elko finished the day with 209 points, and Sammy Naveran of Wells had 203 points.

Gardnerville cowboy Jonathon Glocnitzer tallied 201 points in boys' cutting for 11th place.

Nevada's team ropers have been enjoying success at Springfield. In the overall standings, Turley and Mori are in ninth place.

Gene Harry of Nixon, a member of the Fernley High School Rodeo Club, and his partner, Les Peterson of Elko, are in 11th place, just ahead of Corkill and Eldridge.

In the overall team standings, Nevada is in 10th place after Tuesday morning's performance. The girls' team is also in 10th place, but the boys' team is in second place, 90 points behind Louisiana.
