A memorial service for William Thomas Cross, 81, a 41-year Carson City resident, will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Family, 1201 N. Saliman Road. Burial with full military honors will follow at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Mr. Cross died July 21, 2006, in Carson City. He was born April 2, 1925, in Ely to William T. Brown and Estelle E. Curto.

He married Ardith Nelson in 1948 in Elko.

Before moving to Carson City in 1965, Mr. Cross lived in Elko.

He graduated from Elko High School in 1942 and attended the University of Nevada, Reno.

He worked for the State of Nevada Highway Department, and was an automotive mechanic for Devore & Sawyer Chevrolet and Champion Chevrolet, retiring in 1999.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a hospital corpsman in the Pacific Theater and China during World War II.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a pioneer lifetime member of the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society in Elko. He volunteered yearly at the Elko County Fair horse races and was a supporter of Ducks Unlimited.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, water skiing and bowling, and was a fan of Wolf Pack athletics.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy Jo.

Among his survivors are his wife; son and daughter-in-law William Jr. and Linda Cross of Reno; son Ernie Cross of Carson City; daughter and son-in-law Sundee and Larry Dobson; daughter Kelly Arnold of Carson City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Northeastern Nevada Historical Society in Elko, or a charity of choice.
