A graveside service with full military honors for Leland Samuel Ewing, 81, a one-year Sparks resident, will be 1 p.m. today at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley. Visitation will be 11 a.m.-noon today at Walton's Sparks Funeral Home, 1745 Sullivan Lane in Sparks.

Mr. Ewing died July 24, 2006, at Northern Nevada Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Sundance, Wyo., to Louis and Vera Belshe Ewing.

He married Irene Tobler in 1950.

Before moving to Sparks, Mr. Ewing lived in Carson City and Gardnerville for many years.

He served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation ordnanceman from 1943-46 and was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska.

He was a private pilot, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Elks Club, Scottish Rite and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by brothers Bill and Bobby Ewing.

Among his survivors are his wife of 56 years; sons and daughters-in-law Rod and Nancy Ewing of Sparks and Larry and Aurelia Ewing of Carson City; son William Ewing; daughter, Karen Lacki, of Las Vegas; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Walton's Sparks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
