Nevada stumbles a little bit at rodeo

The Nevada team stumbled a few notches after the first go-round results were announced Wednesday night at the National High School Rodeo Association Finals in Springfield, Ill.

The cowboys and cowgirls from the Silver State saw their ranking drop to 14th overall. The boys' team is in 13th place, while the girls' team is in 12th place.

Only a handful of Nevada contestants competed Thursday morning.

Despite slipping in the overall standings, Haylee Turley of Las Vegas continues to hang on to her No. 2 spot as all-around cowgirl, while Fallon's Bailey Corkill dropped to fourth overall for rookie all-around cowgirl.

Turley also maintained her third-place hold in goat tying. Fallon's Jordan Norcutt, who finished third in goat tying during Wednesday night's performance with a time of 9.4 seconds, is in 27th place overall. The Fallon sophomore also took ninth in goat tying during Thursday's performance in 9.31.

Turley came in 15th Wednesday night in barrel racing in 18.546 and 15th Thursday morning in 18.525., The top 20 contestant in barrel racing are within one second of first-place Kale Miller of St. Anthony, Idaho.

Texas and Nevada are producing a potent team roping tandem.

Adan Banuelos of Jacksboro, Tex., and Austin Adams of Logandale, Nev., placed first Thursday morning in 6.623. The team ropers finished second Wednesday night and are in third place overall.

Matt Hoekenga of Eureka took sixth Thursday in tie-down roping in 13.047, and Natacia Eldridge of Elko placed 11th in pole bending in 22.074.

Nevada also has three other pairs in the top 20 team roping standings for the first go-round. Turley and Quinn Mori of Tuscarora are in 15th place with a time of 8.314. Gene Harry Jr. of Nixon and Les Peterson of Elko have roped themselves into 18th place in 8.471. Corkill and her partner, Dakota Eldridge of Elko, are in 19th place in 8.52.

Elko's James Barton hasn't budged from the No. 2 spot in boys cutting with 222.5 points. Adams follows in sixth place with 221 points.

Two Las Vegas contestants have broken the top 20 in their respective events after the first go. Heather Richard posted a time of 3.201 in breakaway roping to finish in 14th place, while Cody Robinson has been consistent in placing sixth in tie-down roping in 9.646.

Bull rider Curly Fielder of Battle Mountain garnered 74 points to place 16th overall. Dude McCarty of Hiko and Deke Garfield of McDermitt are in 20th place in steer wrestling and saddle bronc, respectively. Bryan Jones of Elko holds down the 22nd spot in bareback riding.
