Carson City

Library to sponsor benefit concert

The Carson City Library will present an evening of music from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The benefit concert, sponsored by the library, supports Preparing for Student Achievement with School Supplies, or PASS, administered by the Dialogue to End Child Homelessness and Hunger and Carson City Health & Human Services.

Admission is free, but a donation of school supplies or money is suggested. Bring new school supplies, such as boxes of No. 2 pencils, pencil boxes, rulers, backpacks, etc. or donate cash.

All supplies will be distributed anonymously to low-income-family children.

Celtic band Wild Sage will provide jigs, reels, hornpipes and waltzes. The Leeping Lassies will demonstrate soft and hard-shoe Irish dancing.

Coffee shop hosts watercolor display

Comma Coffee and zArtist.com present the landscape art of watercolorist Eileen Fuller at The Backseat Gallery at Comma Coffee. Some unframed original art, giclee prints and note cards will also be for sale.

A reception will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday. Hors' d'oeuvres; wine and beer are also available.

Silver City

Several events planned for youth

On Thursday, Young Shakespeare at Sand Harbor will be taking place at 10 a.m. A picnic lunch will follow the play, but parents are needed to carpool their children. For information, call 847-0742.

Children ages 5-17 years old can see demonstrations and experiments from the Society of Women Engineers from 1-3 p.m. Friday and again Aug. 11 at the Silver City Fire House Office.

An African Serval Kitten will be on display for children at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Silver City Fire House. There will be crafts, snacks and books.

Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult at the Chinese Kite Making event, taking place at 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Silver City Park.

Washoe County

Jumbo Grade to play host to history hike

Jumbo Grade, once the site of a boom and bust mining camp, will be the site of a ranger led hike from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday. Participants should meet at the Jumbo Grade Trailhead, about a half mile east of East Lake Boulevard, and bring sturdy shoes and water. Call 849-1825.

Crashed Car Exhibit to be on display for Hot August Nights

The $35,000 custom-built Crashed Car Exhibit, designed to remind all drivers of the dangerous and deadly consequences of drinking and driving, will make its debut in downtown Reno today. It will be on display at the corner of North Virginia Street and Commercial Row at 10 a.m. today through Aug. 13.
