Edwards to be featured at Governor's Dinner

Kansas City head coach Herman Edwards will be the keynote speaker at the University of Nevada's 38th annual Governor's Dinner July 14 in Carson City.

The event has a new sponsor - the Peppermill Hotel Casino. The other title sponsors of the event are IGT, Wells Fargo and the Whispering Vine Wine Company.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a sit-down barbecue dinner starts at 7 p.m. The winner of the Jake Lawlor Award, which is given annually to the man/woman who shows exemplary support of athletics at Nevada, will be announced that night.

Edwards, an outstanding cornerback during his playing days with the Philadelphia Eagles, was the New York Jets head coach the last five seasons. He compiled a 39-41 record before being hired by Kansas City. He led the Jets to the AFC East title in 2002, while earning wild card berths in 2001 and 2004. Both times his teams went 10-6.

Edwards crashed the Eagles' starting lineup as a rookie back in 1977, and went on to start 135 consecutive regular-season games.

Edwards was involvd in one of the more memorable plays in NFL history - The Miracle of the Meadowlands. Edwards scooped up a botched handoff attempt by New York's Joe Pisarcik and returned it 26 yards for a score in a 19-17 win. It was a play that the Giants didn't really need to run. Pisarcik could have taken a knee and ran out the clock.

Tickets for the dinner are $250, and tables of eight are available for $1,800. Tickets may be purchased by calling the AAUN at 784-4870, extension 236. All proceeds benefit Nevada's intercollegiate sports program.
