Cardinals fall against Damonte

The Carson Cardinals baseball team fell to the Damonte Rebels 7-2 on Saturday at Damonte Ranch.

Rob Valerius struck out four over 3.2 innings, Tyler Smith struck out four in 1.2 innings and Joe Skates didn't allow a run in recording both of his outs by strikeouts for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals scored in the second when Tony Fagan doubled and he eventually scored when Nick Smallman and him pulled off a double steal. Carson scored its other run in the sixth when Joe Skates singled, stole second, went to third on wild pitch and scored on Markus Adams' RBI groundout.

Brooks Greenlee and Cody Bone each added a hit for the Cardinals, who will play at 1 p.m. today at Ron McNutt Field against the Reno Titans.

Murphy, Yavapai end up second in nation

Truckee High graduate J.R. Murphy did all he could to help Arizona's Yavapai College win the national title, capping an outstanding season with a clutch effort on Friday. But in the end, Yavapai fell just short.

Murphy kept Yavapai alive in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association World Series with a complete game shutout in a 9-0 win over Tennessee's Walters State. With the win, Yavapai forced another game on Saturday against Walters State. Walters State won 7-6 to take the title.

In the game that was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule, Murphy allowed five hits, striking out five and walking one. He's had two outstanding efforts in the World Series.

In Yavapai's opener, a 6-5 loss against Alabama's Wallace State, Murphy allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits in 8.1 innings, striking out nine. Yavapai fought all the way back from the opening loss to advance to Saturday's championship game.

For the season, Murphy finished with an 11-1 record with a 1.48 earned run average, striking out 118 in 109.2 innings.

Capital City VB club sets clinics, league

The Capital City Volleyball Club will conduct several summer clinics and summer leagues for girls in grades 3-12.

All clinics and leagues will be held at the Silver State Athletic Center, 5680 Morgan Mill Road in Carson City. The three-day clinics will be run by Capital City head coach Dan McLaughlin, whose high school teams at Whittell have won four state titles and four-time national championship coach Steve George.

An all skills clinic will be held July 21-23, a setters and hitters clinic will be held July 28-30 and a Get Ready for Varsity clinic will be held from Aug. 4-6. Times for all the clinics will be 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

A lunch break will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday. Cost for each clinic will be $75.

League play will run two nights a week from July 5-Aug. 11. There will be leagues for third-fifth graders, sixth-eighth graders and ninth-12th graders. Cost is $75.

Prestella Memorial golf event is slated

Golfers and donations are still needed for the first Kenny Prestella Memorial Golf Tournament.

The event will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 25 at Empire Ranch Golf Course. It will be a shotgun start, four-person, best ball scramble.

Cost is $100 per person, which includes a barbecue after the the tournament, two longest drive hole prizes, two closest to the hole prizes and a drawing.

A Sea-Doo with trailer from Carson City's Michael's Cycle Works is also be offered for a hole-in-one.
