Cardinals defeat Damonte Rebels

The Carson Cardinals opened the Reno Knights Memorial Day Weekend Baseball Tournament with a 7-6 win over the Damonte Rebels on Thursday at Damonte Ranch.

Joe Skates went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs to lead Carson's 13-hit attack. Tony Fagan went 3-fof-4, Markus Adams doubled, Kyle Mandoki had a hit and two RBI, David Leid had a hit and an RBI and Bryt Lewis and Rob Valerius each had two hits.

Winning pitcher Nick Smallman allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six and walking two over four innings. Stephen Sawyers pitched a scoreless fifth inning, striking out two and David Eller pitched a scoreless sixth, striking out one.

Ed Lovelace allowed two runs in the seventh, but struck out two in picking up the save.

Carson will continue play iin the tournament at 5 p.m. today against the Sparks Bombers at Reed.
