1997 Carson High graduate receives nursing degree

Catherine McAllister, a 1997 graduate of Carson High School, graduated May 20 from the University of Nevada, Reno, Orvis School of Nursing with collegiate honor society Phi Kappa Phi recognition and high distinction honors.

McAllister, 27, received the top scholar award for the College of Health and Human Services, one of eight colleges at UNR.

She also received the U.S. Army Spirit of Nursing Award and the U.S. Navy Dedication to Nursing Award.

McAllister, her husband, Sean and daughter, Alie, are moving to Wallingford, Conn., where she will pursue a nursing career.

Student accepted into dance school in Massachusetts

Taylor Tucker, 15, has been accepted into the Walnut Hill School for Ballet in Natick, Mass. More than 1,000 students auditioned for the school, with only 15 accepted.

Walnut Hill offers a full academic program. Tucker will leave at the end of June for the summer program, come back to Carson City for three weeks, and then return for the year-round program.

"It will be very difficult to let her go, but this is her dream," her mom said.

Tucker began dancing at the age of 4 with Gina Kaskie at Western Nevada Performing Arts. She has studied all disciplines, but most likes ballet.

She has performed in shows in Carson City and Reno, including the "Wizard of Oz," "Crazy for You" and the "Nutcracker."

Carson High 2002 valedictorian graduates college with honors

Carson Thomas, 21, the son of Marta Adams of Carson City, graduated summa cum laude on Saturday from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., with a bachelor of arts degree in English literature.

He was also inducted for academic honors into the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Carson was valedictorian of the 2002 Carson High School graduating class.

Carleton College is a private liberal arts college.

4-H council hosts college and apprenticeship night

Twelve to 19-year-olds can gather information about educational opportunities after high school at College and Apprenticeship Information Night, 6:30 p.m., Friday at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Carson City office, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12.

The event is free of charge. Representatives from University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada Community College, and the Building Trades Apprenticeship Program will talk about their programs.
