Sanchez, Kierstead set for Golden West meet

Carson High's Kayla Sanchez and Andrea Kierstead are entered in the nation's most prestigious high school track meet.

Both are entered in the Golden West Invitational to be held on Sunday, June 11 at Folsom (Calif.) High. Sanchez is entered the three events that she recently won NIAA 4A State titles: the 100 and 200 meters and the 300 hurdles.

Her entry times are 11.98 seconds in the 100, 24.78 in the 200 and 43.27 in the 300 hurdles. In her first two years of high school, Sanchez has won six state crowns. She also qualified for the Golden West meet last year, but was unable to compete.

Kierstead is entered in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.94. Kierstead recently won the state title in that event.

Kierstead is also entered in the 300 hurdles.

Other Northern Nevada athletes entered in the meet include Reno High's Mel Lawrence in the girls 3,200 (10:25.5). Galena's Dan Geib is scheduled to make his second straight trip to the Golden West meet as he is also entered in the 3,200 (9:12.44).

Three Northern Nevada athletes are entered in the pole vault. Reno's Cameron Kroll, who is only one of a handful of athletes to ever clear 16 feet, and Galena's Tony Fritsche (15-8) are entered. Smith Valley's Kylee Gleason will make her second trip to the Golden West meet in the girls pole vault with a personal best of 12-0.
