CHS football to begin with new assistants

The Carson High football program, with a revamped coaching staff, will begin its summer program on Monday.

The varsity and junior varsity will run from 7 to 10 a.m. while the freshmen will go from 8-11 a.m. Varsity players will meet on June 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and July 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25. Freshman and JV players will meet on June 12, 13, 15, 19, 20, 22, 26, 27 and 29 and July 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25.

Players can sign up at the Carson High counseling office. On Monday, players are to meet on the field in front of the school. For more information, call Carson head football coach Shane Quilling, 283-1685.

Quilling will be joined by several new coaches, including two with varsity head coaching experience. Blair Roman, the former North Valleys head coach who has also served as an assistant at Carson, will serve as the varsity quarterbacks and outside linebackers coach. Billy McHenry, who served as head coach at Sparks and also previously as an assistant at Carson, will coach defensive backs and receivers.

Former Carson standout Javier Vega will also coach defensive backs and receivers while Jim Franz will coach the offensive and defensive line. Also assisting on the varsity level will be Charlie Lafluer, who will help with the offensive and defensive lines as well.

Among the junior varsity coaches will be Mark Rodina and Billy Hudson. Jim Bean will be the freshmen head coach and among his assistants will be Coy Peacock. "We have a very solid staff," Quilling said. "We feel real good about our varsity staff and their experience. I'm excited about all of our new coaches on the varsity staff."

Johnson joins Nevada staff

Kwanza Johnson will join the Wolf Pack men's basketball staff as an assistant coach.

Johnson comes to the University of Nevada after spending the past season at Eastern Illinois. He returns to the Western Athletic Conference after serving as a member of the coaching staff at Tulsa for four years from 2001 until 2005. Johnson helped guide the Golden Hurricane to the 2002 WAC regular-season championship and the 2003 WAC Tournament title, while Tulsa advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in both 2002 and 2003.

"We are extremely excited to have a coach of Kwanza's caliber join our staff," Nevada coach Mark Fox said. "He will be a valuable addition to our program because of his coaching and playing experience."

Prior to Tulsa, Johnson was an assistant coach at Arkansas-Little Rock in 2001, helping the Trojans improve from four wins to 18 in his one season there. He also was an assistant coach at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (2000) and an administrative assistant at Tulsa for two years (1998-99).

Johnson played at Tulsa and was a member of teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 1994 and 1995. He was a team captain and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Defensive team in 1995. Johnson began his collegiate playing career at Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla., where he was the junior college Region II Player of the Year and was named to the national junior college all-tournament team in 1993.

Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in economics from the Tulsa in 1995 and his juris doctorate from the Tulsa College of Law in 1999.

He and his wife, Kim, have two daughters, Kaitlyn (5) and Kendall (1).
