New restaurant planned for Eagle Station

A locally owned barbecue restaurant is one of two new businesses planned for the Eagle Station shopping center off South Carson Street.

Owner Ralph Swagler said Friday that Locals Barbecue Co. will attract customers with its family-style recipes and gigantic 2,100-pound grill that he designed. Anchored by Raley's supermarket, the center will also feature a new nail salon. Nail Studio is scheduled to open in July.

Sperry Van Ness advisor Lyle Chamberlain represented both the 3723 S. Carson St. center landlord and the new tenants.

Swagler said he's spent nearly five years preparing to open his business. Swagler talked to other proprietors and evaluated their business plans. To get it started he's invested $450,000.

The time was right after he moved to Carson City six months ago from Sonoma County to be near his daughter and grandchildren.

Swagler is a professional wine judge and former wine educator at the Santa Rose Junior College viticulture program, so he plans on having an extensive wine and beer lists.

"I want to provide for the customers here and give them something to draw them back each and every time," he said.

Locals Barbecue Co., 3849 S. Carson St., will open in late August or early September with seven full-time employees. His menu will include barbecue chicken, pulled pork, hamburgers, tri-tip and ribs cooked on a grill built by Paramount Iron, of Carson City. His goal is to open other restaurants in the area.

The 1,800-square-foot restaurant can seat 41. "In the summer we will have seating out on the patio," he said.
