Carson City's Locals BBQ has been put on the map - literally.

The 2011 Rand McNally Road Atlas listed the restaurant, 3849 S. Carson St., as one of the few dozen destinations in its "Best of the Road" feature that includes five road trips in the United States.

Locals BBQ owner Ralph Swagler said he was surprised when he heard the news.

"We had a customer, they called us and said, 'hey, you might want to look at this,'" Swagler said Thursday.

The customer, who lives in Carson City, had purchased a copy of the atlas while traveling in Maryland and had noticed Locals BBQ listed on page 137, which features a guide for a road trip from Reno to O'Neals, Calif. Other destinations mentioned include the Thunderbird Lodge in Incline Village and the Animal Ark in Reno.

Swagler said some people have stopped by the restaurant because of the atlas.

"Two of them asked to have my son autograph their atlas," Swagler said. Another customer bought a bottle of their barbecue sauce to which his son was asked to add his John Hancock.

The atlas said editors hand-picked the locations to feature for each road trip.

"We must have really been on our game that day," Swagler said.
