The 2006 Carson City Rotary Club Scholar-Steps Scholarship was given to Jennifer Hillyer, a mother of four, and an honors student and tutor at Western Nevada Community College.

The Rotary award program, created five years ago, gives up to $3,000 per year for up to four years of college.

Hillyer describes life as an "interesting challenge."

She left high school before graduating and took the wrong road temporarily, before earning her general education degree and getting help.

She is determined to succeed for her children and her community and is successfully battling multiple sclerosis.

Carson High student graduates with two college degrees

Gretchen Taylor graduated May 14 from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., with a bachelor of arts degree in international studies and a bachelor of science degree in biology.

Taylor, a 2002 graduate of Carson High School, also made the dean's List for the spring semester, obtaining between a 3.5-3.69 grade-point average.

Western Nevada closed July 4

Western Nevada Community College will be closed on Tuesday in observance of the Fourth of July. Campuses in Carson City, Fallon, and Minden/Gardnerville, along with the WNCC rural centers in Fernley, Hawthorne, Smith, and Yerington will be open regular hours on Wednesday. WNCC Lovelock is closed for the summer and will open August 4.

2001 Carson High graduate heads to law school

Peter Elverum, 23, graduated May 6 with honors from Montana State University, Bozeman, Mont.

A 2001 graduate of Carson High School, Elverum graduated with a degree in political science and will attend Gonzaga School of Law in Spokane, Wash., to which he received a $15,000 scholarship.

Upon graduation, Elverum was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army. Elverum, who ranked in the top 5 percent of all Army ROTC Cadets nationally, received several honors, including the Department of the Army's Superior Cadet Award, the Major General Robert Frederick Award and the George C. Marshall Award.

Elverum is the son of Ken and Kay Elverum of Carson City.

2001 Carson High grad to work for architectural firm

Daryl Nourse, 23, received a masters degree in architecture from Montana State University on May 6 in Bozeman, Mont.

Nourse, the son of Dan and Lori Nourse of Carson City, graduated from Carson High School in 2001. He will be staying on in Bozeman as project manager for Reed Smith Architects.

2004 Carson High graduate makes spring dean's list

Devon Anderson, a 2004 graduate of Carson High School, was named to the deans list at Colby College in Waterville, Maine for outstanding academic achievement for the spring semester.

Anderson, who is majoring in biology, is the son of Dennis and Lynn Anderson.

Three Carson students graduate from Oregon State

Ryanne Amodei, Sarah Field and Jessie Hong, all of Carson City, graduated from Oregon State University, in Corvallis, Ore., on June 18.

Amodei received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering; Field, a bachelor of science degree in nutrition and food management and Hong, a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering.

Field and Hong both graduated magna cum laude.

Former Gardnerville native recognized by Chris EvertMUG IN DEADLINE PHOTOS

Bradley Daub, 34, son of Art and Beverly Daub of Gardnerville received the Deaver Teacher of the Year Award at Pope John Paul II High School, in Boca Raton, Fla.

Daub, a history teacher, received a $1,000 check, given to him by former tennis star Chris Evert.

Daub is a 1990 graduate of Douglas High School and received his teaching credentials from Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village.

His mother has been a teacher at Carson Middle School for 25 years.

A Really Big Sale needs donations

Donations are now being accepted for A Really Big Sale that will benefit The Children's Museum in Carson City.

All kinds of items are welcome: toys, tools, sports equipment, kitchenware, small appliances, collectibles, books, furniture, etc., but no clothing.

Donated items are tax deductible and can be brought to the Children's Museum from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily.

The Really Big Sale will be held at 813 N Carson St from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
