A wake for Charles O. "Charlie" Alsberge, 74, a 17-year Dayton resident, will be at 1 p.m. July 2 at the Dayton Inn.
Mr. Alsberge died June 17, 2006. He was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Los Angeles, to Clayton and Mildred Alsberge. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1949 and attended Hartnell College.
Mr. Alsberge built and raced dragsters, roadsters and hydroplane boats. He broke the land-speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in 1966.
He enjoyed cars, racing, NASCAR, hunting, fishing, gardening, card playing, cooking, politics and sports. He was a fan of San Francisco's Giants and 49ers and NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon.
He owned Coast Carpet Service in Salinas, Calif., for many years, and Charlie's Lounge in Hollister, Calif.
He moved to Dayton in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his father and niece Terrie Horcaho.
Among his survivors are his mother; sister Gail Campbell, both of Patterson; brother Clayton Alsberge, of Las Crusas, N.M.; daughter Linda Eaton; daughters and sons-in-law Lisa and Mark McShane, Carole and Dave Cook, all of Hollister, and Judy and David Berry of Carlsbad, Calif.; son Walter Alsberge of Arroyo Seco, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Toni Alsberge of Monterey, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Cancer Center at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.
Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
